Matthieu Smyth

Enseignant en Anthropologie, Rituel et Histoires des Liturgies

Université de Strasbourg – France

Now professor at the University of Strasbourg, the main topic of my research has been religious history and anthropology, with a special concern for ritual, and that, since the beginning of my studies.

I was convinced that collective rituals were a profound resource for human wellbeing.

My academic life has encouraged me to study the rituals of the ancient West: Christian rituals for the most part, but also more ancient rituals, notably animistic, that have been coexisting with the former for far more than a thousand years.

Since 2013, it has been my endeavour to try and link this field of study with that of contemporary research on the role of the body, emotions and social engagement within therapeutic protocols.

In this respect, I underwent notably a Somatic Experiencing ® training.

In the wake of these research, I’m also fascinated by the part sports play in human life. »
